Precision work on a large scale: a new extraction tower for Nordzucker at Schladen
Relying on heavy-lift cranes, precision assembly and perfectly coordinated project management, BMA has built a 39 m high extraction tower for future sugar production.
When an extraction tower is built, components weighing several tons meet millimetre-level precision. BMA has now completed a new extraction tower for Nordzucker at Schladen. Very soon, hot water will be used to extract sugar from beet pulp at the site that until recently was dominated by cranes, steel and welding. Before the extraction tower could start operation, each component had to be in exactly the right place.
A tower of impressive dimensions
The extraction tower’s dimensions speak for themselves: a diameter of 12 m, a height of more than 39 m and some components that weigh several dozen tons. BMA supplied the parts, carried out assembly at the site and was in charge of the entire project workflow – from construction site logistics to the coordination of contractors and to commissioning. The extraction tower was commissioned in time for the 2026 beet campaign.
Precision logistics for heavy loads
The extraction tower assemblies were pre-assembled on an area of around 5,000 m2. One 100-ton crane was in continuous use, while additional cranes with working load limits of up to 1,000 t were deployed for particularly heavy loads. Precise coordination of materials, logistics and work processes was required throughout and for every detail, from the delivery of hundreds of tons of steel to the smallest bolt.
Challenging wintry conditions
Right at the start of construction in January, snowy and icy conditions proved a challenge to the timetable. Crane lifts had to be rescheduled and assembly surfaces cleared. Relying on radiant heaters and de-icing operations and by adapting processes, the team nevertheless managed to complete the work in the time planned. ons.
Team work is key to project success
Around 40 skilled staff were involved in the project. While they were busy welding, assembling and moving heavy loads on the construction site, the project management and site supervisor ensured smooth operation in the background. Thanks to the close coordination between Nordzucker and BMA and to short decision-making processes, it was possible to quickly respond to new requirements and together find soluti
